Maintenance is a very crucial part of keeping
your system running smoothly with less downtime, while helping to
make your computer run faster. You should do Maintenance every other
week depending on your workload and what applications you use. It
may also help your hard drive last longer. I recommend to my clients,
using Macs, to use Norton Utilities. For PCs you can run whatever
utility you would like, but I also recommend Norton.
With Norton you can run a Disk Doctor
and an Optimizer. You should start off booting your Mac from the
CD, which you can do by holding down the "C" key while
the CD is in the drive. This will let you start from the CD, which
will allow you to fix your hard drive properly. Run Disk Doctor,
but before starting, go into the "preferences" on the
CD at the top of the screen and go to "repair" and check
to fix automatically. Then you can start the disk doctor.
After Disk Doctor is complete, go to Speed Disk
and run that. After you complete this, go to the "control panel"
"startup" and select your hard drive and restart. When
you restart, make sure you rebuild the desktop by holding down the
"Option" + "Command" keys at the same time,
while your computer starts. When it asks you to rebuild your desktop,
click OK. On your PC you can use Norton or a program you are comfortable
with. Even though the PC versions of disk utilities are run differently
they serve the same purpose. Just install Norton and run Disk Doctor
and Speed Disk. Now you should be good for a week or so.
Macs get viruses too!
Even though PCs are more vulnerable to Viruses,
Macs are still able to attract an unwanted Virus. Macs run some
programs that viruses attack, for example: Office (Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.). When doing maintenance, I also check
my clients Virus Definitions. This is VERY important, especially
if you use PCs. If you do not have virus protection on your computer
Get it! Keep up with your virus definitions, which is usually very
easy to do. Simply read the screen and it usually tells you how
to update your Virus Definitions. For Macs, you should update your
Virus Definitions every month. For PCs, you should check every week
to see if there are new Virus Definitions out.
Good luck with your maintenance and make sure
you do it as often as possible. You will see a difference in you
computer!
