| What is a Freelancer? |
| According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1/3 of
professional graphic designers consider themselves to be self-employed
freelancers. With the unsteady economy, these numbers are increasing.
Freelancers may be available to work at your location (in-house) or
at their own office (out-of-house). |
| |
| A Note on Freelance Rates... |
| Typically, the rates for freelance designers are higher
than the corresponding salary rates, as they are responsible for covering
their tax commitments and the work is not steady. Rates can be negotiated
on an hourly or per-project basis. The more work you send their way,
the more flexible they may be in their pricing. |
| |
| If you have concerns about having a tight budget, be
up front about that with your designer. They may have a suggestion
of ways that you can scale back your project so that you're satisfied
and they're appropriately compensated. |
